Essential Question: How did the geography of Manhattan affect how people lived in 1660?

Topic: How can we learn about the lives of the people of New Amsterdam in 1660 by examining a map of their town?


Workshop Outcomes: Participants will:

  1. TECH - Be able to locate a specific site on the Internet using an iPad and negotiate to a specific page on a wikispace.
  2. TECH/SS - Be able to digitally examine a historical document in a wikispace.
  3. TECH/SS - Be able to take a screenshot of the New Amsterdam 1660 map (divided in quadrants): edit, crop, enhance and save using an iPad.
  4. TECH - Be able to upload that map into the Educreations app.
  5. TECH - Be able to record their voices as they work in the Educreations app.
  6. SS - Be able to Identify elements of a map (compass rose, title, key, symbols, labels)
  7. SS/ELA - Be able to identify historical details on the map using the "I See" protocol.
  8. SS/ELA - Be able to differentiate between what they see (I See) and what they think (I Think) of the historical details on the map.
  9. SS/ELA - Be able to process what they've seen and thought about details on the map to ask a question (I Wonder) about the information.
  10. SS/ELA - Be able to research answers to their I Wonder questions.
  11. TECH/SS/ELA - Be able to share verbally and in writing what they've learned.



Your Tasks

Putting the New Amsterdam 1660 Map into Educreations

  1. Working in pairs on one iPad, go to the wikispace - Our Conferences - Resources - Map with quadrant lines
  2. Take a screenshot of the quadrant map by clicking the home button and on/off button simultaneously.
  3. Go to the camera roll: edit, crop, enhance & save your photo.
  4. Click on the home button and then open Educreations
  5. Go to the center icon, open photos and click the last photo
  6. Move the yellow map image to the left and type your name on the right using the "T".

Video #1 - Document Analysis

  1. Examine your assigned quadrant on the New Amsterdam 1660 map.
  2. Enlarge your quadrant by pinching the image on the iPad
  3. Press "record" and speak. Identify everything you see in your quadrant by drawing arrows with ink from the ink pad.
  4. Say "I See" when you point the arrow at each object.
  5. Make sure that both partners speak.
  6. Partner #2 fills in all the boxes of the STWS chart on the back of your agenda.
  7. When you've listed everything you see in your quadrant, press "done", "save lesson", type your first names, press "next", public, SS and save.
  8. Note: create an Educreations account at this point if you have not already done so.
  9. Now listen to your recording.

Video #2 - See-Think-Wonder-Share Chart

  1. Go back to the wikispace and take a screenshot of the SWTS chart.
  2. Edit, crop, enhance and save your new image.
  3. Open Educreations and make a new video.
  4. Go to the center icon, press "photos", locate the SWTS chart and click to insert in Educreations.
  5. Type in your entries into each box.
  6. Record after you've finished filling in the boxes.
  7. Press "Done", "Save Lesson", type your names, SS and Save.

Answering your "I Wonder" questions
  1. If you are assigned Quad #1, read and listen to the Quizlet words in Dutch and English. Add what you've learned to your "I Share" box.
  2. If you are assigned Quads #2 and 4, look at the Castello Map below and read about the origins of Wall Street. Add to your "I Share" Box.
  3. If you are assigned Quad #3, be sure to share what you know about the compass rose, the map title and the canals.

Share What You've Learned with the Group
  1. Be sure to explain what you and your partner saw in your quadrant.
  2. Ask the audience to circle their maps as well.

Topic: How Does A Suspension Bridge, like the Brooklyn Bridge, work?


Workshop Outcomes: Participants Will:

  1. Be able to locate a specific site on the Internet using an iPad and negotiate to a specific page on a wikispace.
  2. Be able to digitally examine a video, diagram and quizlet on a wikispace.
  3. Be able to create an Educreations video, adding drawing, text and voice.
  4. Be able to listen and understand key words relating to a suspension bridge.
  5. Be able to record their voices as they work in the Edcreations app.
  6. Be able to demonstrate through drawing how a suspension bridge works, including key elements (tower, cable, roadway, anchorage)
  7. Be able to save their work.
  8. Be able to share verbally and in writing what they've learned.

Your Task

  1. Watch the video “What is a Suspension Bridge?" below.
  2. Click on the Quizlet, read and listen to vocabulary.
  3. Study the diagram. Discuss labels with partner.
  4. Hit the home button and open Educreations.
  5. Touch the ink pad down arrow and choose the black ink.
  6. Click the record button.
  7. Draw a suspension bridge and explain how it’s built.
  8. Press “Done”, save lesson, type your first name, next, SS, Save.
  9. Listen to your recording.
