Slater's Mill.png Samuel Slater.png

Samuel Slater built the first water powered textile mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1793. He hired entire families including children as laborers. Many of these families lived in company-owned houses, shopped in company-owned stores and went to company-owned schools and churches. One of the earliest mill villages was in Slaterville, Rhode Island, built in 1807. Click on the website above for more information.
