Project 1: The First People of the Western Hemisphere

4 Migration Theories.pngBackground
Our earth has had many Ice Ages, where the temperature of the earth has changed rapidly. Today, we are living in the warm stage of our latest Ice Age. But it has not always been as warm as it is today. In this unit, our students studied how people first came to the Western Hemisphere during the last warm period of the Ice Age, tens of thousands of years ago.

Based on archaeological evidence found in many parts of North and South America,
scientists have developed four migration theories: (1) The first people walked from Asia over the land bridge called Beringia that appeared when the Bering Sea receded, following herds of giant mammals like the mammoth. (2) They sailed north and east by sea from Asia along the North American coast, following schools of fish and herds of sea mammals, like whales and seals. (3) They sailed from Australia by sea to South America. (4) They sailed north and west from Europe to North America. The strongest evidence points to the first three theories.

Research - Click here for a link to our research page.

On this page, students have created projects that illustrate their understanding of one of these theories. We hope you enjoy our work!

Task 1: Tellagami Avatar Presentation
  1. Create a Tellagami that looks like you. Decide on hair and eye color, clothing and body positioning.
  2. Upload a background image from Dropbox that illustrates what the Western Hemisphere looked like 12,000 years ago.
  3. Use a landscape, picture of mammals crossing the land bridge or map as your background image.
  4. Place your avatar in front of your background image and size proportionally. If you use a mammoth in your background, be sure to move your avatar out of the way so it doesn't look like it's going to be trampled!
  5. Remember, woolly mammoths were almost twice the size of human beings, so make sure your avatar is smaller than the mammoth.
  6. Write a script about the Beringia Land Bridge Theory, describing how global warming made the glaciers recede, opening a corridor between the ice sheets and exposing the land bridge under the Bering Sea, allowing animals and people to cross from Asia into North America.
  7. Record your script, speaking slowly and pronouncing carefully. Remember your script must fit in 90 seconds!
  8. Save your work.
  9. Email to our class gmail for publication in the wikispace.

Task 2: Student-Designed Rubric
  1. Working collaboratively within your team, design a rubric for this project.
  2. Decide what a perfect "4" Tellagami project looks like.
  3. What key elements must it have?
  4. Write your ideas on a Post-It.
  5. Use the iPad app, Post-It-Plus, to digitize your ideas.
  6. Reorganize your digital Post-Its into the rubric format.
  7. Reach an agreement within your team on your final rubric and submit for publication.

Task 3: Peer Review on Student-Designed Rubric
  1. Using a paper copy of the student-created rubric, listen to each presentation below.
  2. Make a separate rubric for each presentation.
  3. Evaluate the presentation based on the rubric criteria.
  4. Write a comment on the base of the rubric.

Task 4: Vote for the best Tellagami!
  1. Complete the Google Form below to vote for the best Tellagami presentation.
  2. Be sure to leave your first name and class so your vote can be counted.
  3. Sorry, only students in grades 4 and 5 may vote.
