Carpenters in New Amsterdam and the New Netherlands Colony
Objective: Explain the role of carpenters in the Dutch Colony.
Essential Question: How did carpenters contribute to the growth of the colony?
Historical Background: The Dutch colony of New Netherlands contained a vast amount of forests. The Dutch West India Company had an enormous need for timber to build and maintain its huge fleet of ships. The forests of the new colony provided the raw materials for a thriving shipbuilding and saw mill industry. However, the Dutch West India Company was not interested in turning the colony into a producer of finished products, like chairs and tables. The Dutch were only interested in exporting the timber and using the resources to build ships and houses. Therefore, carpenters in the new colony were very important to the economy and had to be able to:
  • build wooden buildings for homes and businesses
  • create wooden objects needed in the home or businesses
  • build ships and all wooden objects needed to sail the ship

All of these enterprises needed specific tools. Let's explore some of those tools to see what the jobs of these colonists were like.
